The Bond Market: A Financial Giant Much Bigger Than Gold
When people talk about financial markets, gold and the stock market often receive the most attention. However, one of the largest and most important financial markets in the world is the bond market. It is worth tens of trillions of dollars more than the gold market and plays a fundamental role in how the global economy functions.
How Big Is the Bond Market Compared to Gold?
The global bond market is valued at roughly $140–150 trillion, depending on the measurement and year. This includes government and corporate debt securities across countries.
In comparison, the total above-ground gold stock is valued at approximately $25–30 trillion, depending on the prevailing gold price. This includes gold held as jewellery, bars, coins, central-bank reserves and other forms.
In simple terms, the bond market is worth around five times the value of all the gold ever mined. These figures are approximate, and comparisons can vary depending on whether we measure outstanding bonds, annual trading activity or the total value of gold holdings.
