The Indian rupee has been under pressure against the U.S. dollar in recent years, and several global and domestic factors are responsible for this trend. One major reason is the strength of the U.S. economy and higher interest rates in America. When the U.S. Federal Reserve increases interest rates, global investors often move their money into dollar-based assets for better returns. This increases demand for the dollar and weakens currencies like the rupee.

Another important factor is India’s heavy dependence on crude oil imports. Since oil is traded globally in dollars, rising crude oil prices force India to spend more dollars on imports. This increases demand for the U.S. dollar in the foreign exchange market and puts additional pressure on the rupee. A weaker rupee also makes imports such as electronics, fuel, and foreign goods more expensive for Indian consumers.

Foreign investor behavior also plays a key role. Whenever global uncertainty rises due to wars, recession fears, or market volatility, investors tend to withdraw money from emerging markets like India and move toward safer assets in the U.S. This outflow reduces demand for the rupee and strengthens the dollar further.

Despite the weakening rupee, there can also be some benefits for India. Export-oriented sectors such as IT services, pharmaceuticals, and textile companies may earn higher profits because their overseas earnings become more valuable when converted into rupees. However, if the rupee continues to weaken sharply, it can increase inflation and raise the overall cost of living in the country.
